Love this idea! Look forward to hearing more about your zine project. I’ve been preparing my first “yarn bomb” project and this has me thinking about if I’d like to leave a zine with it... Regarding location: I am a bit nervous about if it will be considered art or vandalism. I think perhaps a paper zine is less likely to be frowned on? I just love the idea of providing a surprise to a stranger which could possibly bring some unexpected joy to their day.

Hi Maria! Thank you so much. About art or vandalism, that’s a great question. If I think to some great street artists they were all considered vandals at first. The possibility that what we do will be considered vandalism is a sure thing. The large majority of the works I did in public spaces lasted no more than few days before being stolen or removed by authorities. Even though, I’m leaning toward a “ethical vandalism” where what I “expose” is evident and accessible but do not alter or ruin the infrastructures or the environment. Eg. I use to carry a roll of masking tape and a big marker to draw impromptu stickers that can be easily removed without damages.

Good luck with your yarn bombing, go for it and keep us posted!!

Thanks for the thoughtful reply Mauro. I appreciate the term “ethical vandalism”. In yarnbombing this seems to work well with attaching the yarn to something using zip ties rather than sewing on - to make it easier to remove. Sewn on seems more appropriate for approved installations. I’m considering the idea of contacting local businesses and/or park authorities to see if I can get approval for some projects.

I LOVE your idea of impromptu tape stickers...brilliant!

An idea for your zines… If your goal is to prompt conversation, then my thought is that the easier you make it for someone who stumbles on the zine to reply the better.

So I wonder if you could create a QR code which would make it super easy for someone to snap a photo of the QR code to be directed to wherever you are promoting the ongoing conversation.

For example...If you want them to comment on an Instagram post (which has photos of that particular zine) then maybe the QR code directs them to that specific Instagram post. (Is that even possible? Not sure!) Or it could lead to a Google form with 1-3 questions for them to consider answering. Or to a page on your website, devoted to that particular conversation.

Another thought is that perhaps your zine has some empty pages at the end with prompts for a quick written or sketched reply to your zine which they could send you? I’m reminded of geocaching. Does that happen in your part of the world? So many fun possibilities for you!
